Large and complex buildings have to be fire safe. But compliance to prescriptive requirements, as stated in the building regulations, is often not required. It is the goal behind the requirements that counts. In case of calamities, people must have the opportunity to escape in time, the damage should be reduced to a minimum and emergency services should be given the opportunity to perform their duties. Fire Safety Engineering (FSE) uses numerical calculation and experiments to determine spread of fire and smoke, construction and escape behaviour and to define how this goal can be attained. For existing buildings a variety of fire safety assessments exists. Efectis contributes to the spreading of knowledge in this field with training seminars and courses. Efectis has at its disposal an extensive set of modelling tools and laboratory facilities for FSE. This provides, together with an equally extensive knowledge, the starting point for Efectis in Fire Safety Engineering: for every question on fire safety it is possible to find a practical answer.
