As a member of the Turkish Structural Steel Association (TUCSA), we hosted Remzi Albayrak, Head of the Fire Department of Istanbul Municipality, and his management team at our Efectis Era Avrasya’s laboratory. The presentation made by TUCSA’s Fire Committee and Efectis Era Avrasya’s CEO İlker İbik was followed by an examination of the ongoing tests in the laboratory. At the meeting, we shared our intention of carrying out training courses and events at the YAÇEM Academy, TUCSA’s educational facility. By combining all the knowledge and experience of these two institutions, we plan to contribute to making Istanbul safer.

The visit of the Istanbul Fire Department on Tuesday 11 February 2020 was a follow-up to the decisions taken by the same committee at the last meeting held at the Fire Department last November.

During the remarkably constructive and productive visit, the possibilities and capabilities of TUCSA and YAÇEM were discussed, followed by a review of the Grenfell Tower Fire Investigation report. Later that day, a visit was made to Efectis Era Avrasya’s Laboratory, providing  fire testing and certification services to many countries around the world.

As a result of the visit a road map was established:

  • Regarding education: organisation of training courses by YAÇEM Academy in coordination with İBİTEM (Firefighting Training Centre of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) on subjects to be determined according to requirements, especially in the areas of high-rise buildings, fire safety system design and projects approval.
  • Mutual evaluation: examination of the Grenfell Tower Investigation Report conjointly by the authorities of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Fire Department and the YAÇEM Fire Safety Unit, to conclude the lessons to be learned for a safer Istanbul.
  • Regarding regulations: making collective studies on ‘Fire Protection of High-Rise Buildings’ and ‘Fire Disaster Management Joint Command Control Principles’ by taking advantage of the results of the Grenfell Tower fire investigation report (including the large work published by Efectis) and other high-rise fires report results.

This initiative, which sets an example for the joint work of public and local governments and NGOs in our country, as in other developed countries of the world, is expected to yield positive results.
